Anna Quema discusses two works of Susan Hill, The Mist in the Mirror and The Woman in Black, which include “male gothic protagonist who are both the performer and victim of social laws” (Quema 115). These male characters are unique because their concern for their families and their struggles reflect the plight of women and situations female characters typically endure in literature. These characters are used to critique on the social values of Victorian society, especially traditional ideas of women.
